Overcome selfishness

OVERCOME SELFISHNESS

Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest.  But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side.  Then he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me…” Luke 9:46-48 NLT

Selfishness will always want more; it will always want instant gratification, such as eating more, sleeping more, and sinning more. Selfishness results in the loss of God’s supernatural power and it causes us to become people who are full of customs, but who lack miracles, healings, and freedom.

There was an occasion where the disciples were talking about which one of them would be greater. The selfishness and pride in the disciples was fighting to be the best and to stand out; but Jesus taught them that in order for them to be great, they had to become like children.

Then he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me. Whoever is the least among you is the greatest.” Luke 9:48 NLT

Sometimes, we do the same thing with others in life. We argue and fight about who’s the most important, the best, who has more money, who is smarter, who’s better looking, even about who is the closest one to the managers, leaders, or pastors, and all that doesn’t please God.

It is because of God’s grace that we are who we are today, that we have what we have and that we are where we are. Nobody is greater nor lesser than anyone else, we are all equal in value and we all have an important and special calling. However, if we become selfish people, we will end up losing everything, because pride separates us from God and it causes our downfall.

Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 NLT

If we want to be great, then we need to serve with a humble heart. Serving is the purest way to show God and His church your love and gratitude.

But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant… Matthew 20:26

Think about it:

Have you shown signs of selfishness lately?
What motivations in your heart push you to be successful and to serve God?
