RECOVER YOUR PEACE
“… Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin. My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear” (Psalms 38:3-4 NIV).
We have a small dog at home and I can tell when he has done something mischievous. For example, when he has urinated somewhere around the house, he looks scared, avoids eye contact, and puts his tail down low. My suspicions are proven when I check the floor and find his little surprise. You see, even dogs act suspicious when they misbehave.
Can you imagine how we human beings (who have been given a conscious by God) feel when we have done something wrong? We were not designed to do wrong without experiencing a burdened conscience. Maybe our conscious is asleep right now, but one day it will wake-up.
1. Our emotional health gets ruined when our conscious is not in peace.
“My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear” Psalms 38:4 NIV).
Have you seen your kids avoid you or act suspicious after having done something bad, such as eating half a box of cookies before breakfast? They do not have a peaceful conscious, because sin robs us of our peace in our everyday life.
2. Sin robs our physical health.
“… there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin” (Psalms 38:3 NIV).
Our bad actions can affect our bodies. For example, illnesses such as aids, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc. can be the consequence of fornication or adultery; while mental illnesses may be the consequence of addiction.
3. Sin harms our family.
It’s true that there’s no peace in a person that lives with a bad conscience, but the problem is even greater when sin also steals the joy in their family. Many have come to me asking for prayer because of a family member that is making them miserable due to their way of living.
So, what is the solution? Immediate repentance. This restores emotional, physical and relational health. When David understood that his sin was getting him into trouble he immediately confessed it.
The Bible says:
“I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin” (Psalm 39:18 NIV).
The Word of God teaches that he who hides their sin will not prosper, instead they will always face problems and be sick, but he who confesses their sin and abandons it will prosper.
If you’ve been feeling exhausted because of the emotional burdens in your conscious, then I remind you that there is a place for you to rest.
Jesus said:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Mateo 11:28 NIV).
Think about it:
Why is it so easy for us to lose our peace?
What can we do differently today to maintain a peaceful conscious?
