Are you asleep?

ARE YOU ASLEEP?

“Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak” (Mark 14:37 NLT).

The person who lives asleep not only misses out on great opportunities, but they also fall into temptation very easily. Today I want to share another danger that falling asleep enhances: temptations.

Being asleep is the same as being passive, when you’re asleep you are someone who lives without vision, you are indifferent toward what happens in your surroundings. The person who gets distracted does not see the danger that surrounds them and this is why they so easily fall into temptation.

“Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? … Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation…” (Mark 14:37 NLT).

The Bible tells us not to fall asleep, but to stay alert every day whether we are at home, work, school or any other place. Obviously, this doesn’t mean that we are not going to rest and neglect our health, “not falling asleep” refers to keeping watch by praying, reading the Bible, and serving the Lord and people.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NLT).

As long as we are in a body and live in the world our evil desires will always tempt us. We need to be aware of our desires and watch that we do not fall into sin. We need to remember that temptation is not sin, but yielding unto temptation is sin, for it is a decision we choose to make.

Open your eyes and be aware of the dangers that surround you, and choose to live in holiness despite the temptations. Many will criticize you for doing this, but we don’t do this to be “the holiest people” instead we do this to take care of our identity as God’s servants. Wake up, and continue to make the difference.

Think about it:

Why should you be careful not to fall into sin?
What does it mean to stay awake to you?
