Roots of bitterness

ROOTS OF BITTERNESS

“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you” (Psalm 73:21-22 NIV).

We have all been sick in our hearts before, or perhaps we are currently dealing with a sickness in our heart. The sickness I am referring to is bitterness. This kind of feeling can hold us back in life, because it is a toxic emotion.Today, I want us to remember the importance of guarding our hearts in the middle of the storms.

How can we define bitterness? Bitterness is a feeling in the soul that feels like anger and sadness, better said it is resentment. Meaning, it is a feeling that is reheated inside of us because of the pain we have suffered.

Unresolved anger is an entry point for the devil. The Bible says:

“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:26-27 NIV).

Bitterness is the result of offense. We get offended when we are wronged and choose not to forgive. When we do not solve our anger, it becomes resentment which then becomes a root of bitterness.

“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many” (Hebrews 12:15 NIV).

Bitterness is like cancer in our soul that eats us up and distorts us; it causes us to be antisocial. Bitterness transforms us making us forget everything good that God has done, because we are only concentrated on what’s wrong.

What do I want to tell you today? Take care of the garden in your heart. There are many problems in the world that emotionally exhaust us, and that can affect our thought patterns, but we must rest in the Lord every day in order to go forward in life and continue to be a blessing to others.

“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you” (Psalm 73:21-22 NIV).

Think about it:

Why do you think it is important to monitor your emotions?
What roots of bitterness do you need to uproot from your heart?
