Idleness can lead you to sin

IDLENESS CAN LEAD YOU TO SIN

In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 11: 1 NLT)

While all the kings went to war, King David decided not to go. He shouldn’t have been at home, rather, he should’ve been the first to present himself to war. Idleness led him to commit sin, when he slept with a woman that wasn’t his wife.

Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. 3 He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite. (2 Samuel 11: 2-3 NLT)

Idleness makes us sin. When you are unoccupied, the enemy comes and puts you in temptations way. Young people get into trouble, because they have a lot of idle time on their hands. They see many things that they shouldn’t, and that’s what impulses them to sin. It’s how King David fell into temptation because he had nothing to do.

Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her…. 5 Later, when Bathsheba discovered that she was pregnant, she sent David a message, saying, “I’m pregnant” (2 Samuel 11: 4-5 NLT)

In order to cover up his sin, David ended up committing more sins. Not only did he commit adultery, but he also tried to hide what happened and when he failed to do so, he ordered the killing of Bathsheba’s husband. When you hide, to do something wrong, not wanting anyone to find out, it’s because you’re not doing anything good in the eyes of God, but sooner or later everything comes to the light. So, it happened with King David, God sent him a prophet to confront him for his evil deeds. Do not wait to be confronted, sin no more, don’t hide.

People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy. (Prov 28:13 NLT)

Think about it:

Do you spend a lot of time unoccupied?

What productive things can you do in your free time?

Do you have someone to whom you give an account of what you do?
