Satisfied and Proud

Satisfied and Proud

“But when you had eaten and were satisfied, you became proud and forgot me.”Hosea 13:6 (NLT)

It is a human reality: during difficult times, we seek God fervently. But when we reach a place of abundance and comfort, it becomes easy to fall into pride and forget the One who sustained us during our darkest moments. This passage reminds us that we must not let the satisfaction of our needs lead us to a self-sufficient attitude that excludes God.
Lessons on the danger of forgetting God:

  1. God takes care of us in difficult times.
    • “I cared for you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought…”
    • God is faithful and never abandons us, especially in moments of great need. It is important to recognize and remember how He sustained us during trials.
  2. Comfort can lead to pride.
    • “…But when they had pasture, they were filled; they were filled and their heart was exalted…”
    • When things are going well, we are tempted to think we achieved everything by our own strength. This attitude distances us from God and from our dependence on Him.
  3. Forgetting God has consequences.
    • “…and forgot Me.”
    • Forgetting God not only affects our relationship with Him but also our outlook on life. We become insensitive to His grace and less grateful for His blessings.
  4. Gratitude is the antidote to pride.
    • Cultivating a grateful heart protects us from apathy and pride. When we daily remember God’s blessings, our relationship with Him is strengthened, and our hearts are filled with humility.
“But when you had eaten and were satisfied, you became proud and forgot me.Hosea 13:6 (NLT)

Think About It:

  • Are you remembering God in times of abundance and comfort?
  • How can you combat pride with a daily spirit of gratitude?
  • Take a moment today to thank God for the times He has cared for you in your “wilderness.”
