WE GROW IN OUR FAMILY BY SETTING THE EXAMPLE

“So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach.” (Matthew 23:3 NLT)

One of the best ways to grow and mature in the family is by example. One doesn’t transmit what they say, but what they are. It is because of this that we must speak and teach others by setting the example wherever we are.

Jesus warned us not to follow the example of the hypocritical interpreters of the scriptures known as the Scribes and Pharisees. These were people who claimed to follow the Word, but they only talked, they didn’t act with integrity. They allowed religion to take God’s place in their hearts. They would say one thing, but their hearts would set the opposite example.

Once the father prays at home, then the children will know that prayer is important. When the parents serve their local church on Sundays, then their sons and daughters will capture the importance of serving and have a greater disposition to serve, instead of having their parents lecture them, saying: “You should go to church on Sunday. You need to study hard in school. You need to get to work on time.”

What can be said about those parents who stop their children from drinking alcohol or smoking, when they themselves are heavy smokers? Instead, let’s set the example and let our actions speak louder than our words.

Jesus told the people not to follow the example of the hypocritical Pharisees and to instead follow his example in serving one another. Your children and spouse do not want to hear a sermon. They want to see the example of Jesus in your life. Today, decide to let your actions speak through your honest example.

“And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” (John 13:14-15 NLT)

Think About It:

What are you transmitting with your example?
How can you teach or preach to your children, spouse, friends, or disciples?
