More important than finding the donkeys

MORE IMPORTANT THAN FINDING THE DONKEYS

“I am the seer!” Samuel replied. “Go up to the place of worship ahead of me. We will eat there together, and in the morning I’ll tell you what you want to know and send you on your way. And don’t worry about those donkeys that were lost three days ago, for they have been found. And I am here to tell you that you and your family are the focus of all Israel’s hopes.” (1 Samuel 9:19-20 NLT)

Saul’s father lost the donkeys and sent Saul to find them. It occurred to them that Prophet Samuel would have been able to tell them where they were, but the Prophet told them not to worry, that the donkeys had been found. Prophet Samuel had something much more important to tell Saul on behalf of God. He was calling him to be king of Israel.

  1. God will tell us what we need to hear, not only what we want to hear.
  2. God surprises us. He goes beyond our thoughts and alters our plans to enter us into his purpose for our lives.
  3. His thoughts are higher.

For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:9 NLT)

  1. When He calls us to do something, He will give us the grace to be what He wants us to be and do his assignment for our lives.

Even though Saul questioned his calling because he came from a small tribe and not a royal family, God was calling him and would give him the grace to be and do what he couldn’t in his own strengths.

Think about it:

What experience have you had where God has surprised you, giving you more than what you expected? Have you heard what God needs you to hear or only what you want from Him? What has God called you to?
