The bronze serpent

THE BRONZE SERPENT

Then the Lord told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!”. (Numbers. 21:5-8 NLT)

When the people of God left Egypt, they became impatient for the long journey in the desert, and began to complain to Moses, so the Lord sent poisonous snakes, and many were bitten by them. When Moses cried out to God, He instructed the people who were bitten to turn to see the bronze serpent on the pole.

So, Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed!! (Numbers. 21:9 NLT)

That method wasn’t for now, that method was used for that time. Many years later, God instructed King Hezekiah to destroy that snake.

He removed the pagan shrines, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke up the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because the people of Israel had been offering sacrifices to it. (2 Kings 18:4 NLT)
Why did the Lord tell Hezekiah to destroy the serpent that he had told Moses to do years before?

Because the people began to idolize that ancient method and to trust the serpent instead of trusting God. People tend to trust methods, rather than trust God; We trust in doing things as they were done in the past, and when that moves us we are filled with stress. We trust reasoning and logic, instead of trusting God.

We shouldn’t cling to ancient methods, to the ways in which we did things before. Our source is God. Maybe the way you get your income will change from one means to another, but your source is still God. If someone loses their job, that method closed, but if your trust is in God, another method will be opened to you and He will continue to bless you.

…He broke up the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because the people of Israel had been offering sacrifices to it. (2 Kings 18:4 NLT)

Think about it:

Where is your trust?
Have you been filled with stress because the way of doing things changed?
Are you open to change or are you clinging to old methods?
